NJ State Goverment Remains Shut Down

From the Star Ledger:

No break in budget crisis
BY JOSH MARGOLIN AND JEFF WHELAN

New Jersey's historic state government shutdown entered its third day today with no end in sight as Trenton's ruling Democrats openly acknowledged they were getting nowhere in efforts to agree on a new state budget.

On this first business day of the shutdown, Motor Vehicle Commission offices will not open, state courts will handle only urgent matters and more than half the state's work force will be off the job. Wednesday shapes up as a critical day, when Atlantic City casinos and the state's racetracks, beaches, parks and campgrounds are slated to close.
...
Corzine remained locked in a stalemate with Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, a fellow Democrat who is leading the charge against the governor's plan to raise the sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent. The governor insists that is needed to balance the budget responsibly, while Roberts contends it could be avoided with a mix of other taxes and spending cuts.

Pressure ratcheted up on Roberts yesterday as Republicans talked of a possible coup to unseat him and casino workers urged him to give in to Corzine to keep gaming halls open.
...
Two Republican lawmakers, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks, said they had discussed the possibility of a coup with administration officials they would not identify. They said several GOP members remain resentful of tough campaigns Roberts waged against them last year and would like to join with anti-Roberts Democrats to elect a new Speaker. The lawmakers said DeCroce might face a rebellion in his own caucus if he turns Democrats down on a deal to help oust Roberts.

Weird commute this morning.

Not only were the vacationers home, but the state workers as well. Usually the roads are clogged at least partially because about so many people work for the state.

I felt like I was in the movie "The Day after Tomorrow" or maybe like I would see the Statue of Liberty coming up through the sand with nobody around.

I surrendered and moved South after living in NJ for the past forty years. In the sixties it was truly the land of opportunity and a great place to work, live and buy a house. The question now is how to start over and cancell all the outrageous pensions, toxic paid sick days, overpaid public employees at all levels an the notion of twenty years and out with tons of money and all the benefits is unaffordable and an insult to all taxpayers.
You must vote all current politicians out of office for a start and get involved in finding out who is giving away your money, mostly to themselves ! Good Luck

My neighbor, a very sweet woman in her 40s, works for state of NJ, and just doesn't get it.

She complains that she hasn't had a "real" raise in years, just cost-of-living raises, which makes her pension lower. I told her that is what "real-world" people get - minus the pension.

She just loves her health benefits, though, for which she "pays nothing." I had to look away, I was so mortified that New Jersey does this to its taxpayers.

I told her we pay $300 a month towards the premium, plus $25 copays to take our baby to the doctor.

She still didn't get it..just blamed Whitman for creating the mess that Corzine has to try to fix "now."

These State workers are on the milk
and they love it.

We could easily cut 20k state workers and get along fine.

their are 22k alone in human services , what ever that is.

NJ is a joke,, they have drained the
taxpayer dry. And it continues.

Casino's shut down. Never.

Just booked my plane ticket to visit relatives in Nashville. If all works out during my exploratory trip I should be packing my bags in 6 - 12 months. I may actually be able to buy a house and start a family. Once again why does anyone under the age of 30 stay in NJ? I may take a 10 - 20% pay cut but I will save 50% in housing and 60% in taxes.

I remember sometime ago a politician recommended that "Born to Run" become the state song. How right he was.

"It's a death trap it's a suicide rap you got to get out while your young" No truer words ever spoken.
